For our second year of operation, we decided to ride two days of the week, Tuesdays and Thursdays between the two homes we service. Since the trishaw is housed at Port Credit Residences, we offered them the first and third Tuesday of the month with exceptions for special circumstances or to make up rain date cancellations. Since we had to transfer the trishaw to Shores of Port Credit, we felt it appropriate to ride there on consecutive ride dates allowing for changes as needed so their rides would fall on the Thursday following the first Tuesday of the month and then following Tuesday after the weekend. It didn't always work out but that was the plan.
We would keep the other ride days for special events (other homes bringing their residents down to Port Credit for rides) make up days for weather or illness related cancellations as well as scheduling the last Thursday of every month for public rides in the Port Credit area. For the most part it worked out well specially as the first couple of months of our ride season starting in May turned out to have quite a few rainy Tuesdays and Thursdays.
As luck would have it, the
first ride of 2024 kicked off from PCR with our favourite passengers, June and Lori! Janice was our second passenger and we wound up the day with Judy and Blubelle. Since we didn't have any passengers scheduled for 1:00pm I offered a ride to an elderly lady and her daughter who met us at a bench along the trail. They thoroughly enjoyed their impromptu ride since they were only down at Port Credit for a short picnic lunch. It was a gorgeous day and fun was had by all specially me!
Our
first rides of the year out of SoPC were unusually cool for a June day so we had a couple of cancellations but those who did the ride, thoroughly enjoyed it. I was joined by Joseph Wee as a co-pilot in the morning and it was his first experience with CWA-M. Judy rode with companion Julie on the first ride. Joy joined as co-pilot in the afternoon when we rode Robert and Shirley, new comers to SoPC who were reluctant to have their pictures taken.
The weather was definitely better on the next day of rides when we had a
full complement of riders for the day out of SoPC. The last ride of the day was a special request from Kira with her grandmother who had just returned from her husband's grave and so it made the day special for them. I was glad I could accommodate their request and made the day special for me too.
The next
rides were out of PCR with a definite change in the weather and a pleasantly warm day with our popular passengers, June and Lori. They were dressed up for the day with fancy bonnets for their ride. Ray co-piloted with me for the morning. The afternoon ride with Janice and companion, Claudia, was quite enjoyable as well.
And so the weeks turned into months and the rides were appreciated by all. Earlier in the year, before the riding season, I was honoured by the City of Mississauga with the
Phil Green Award for my efforts to bring cycling to a demographic that is usually forgotten about in the cycling lanes. The link above is to my blog post on the award collating different viewpoints and including a video of the event.
