Second online Zoom meet: 10 Skills
On Saturday, April 8 2023, Holy Saturday to some we conducted our second Zoom session as part of our Pilot Training program to go over the ten skills of a qualified CWAM pilot.
We were lucky to have veteran pilot and founder of the Brockville CWA, JoAnn Bell, join our small group for which we were thankful despite it being a long weekend in Canada. We recorded both the main session and the Q&A, both embedded below. I went over the 10 Skills of a CWAM Pilot document describing the main points of each of the 10 skills.... the most over-riding being SLOWNESS. Taking it slow is the key to avoiding many of the pitfalls and accidents that we have seen with trishaws, albeit thankfully rare.
Although our pilots and co-pilots are experienced bicyclists, they need to learn a new set of three-wheeled riding skills where the passengers, not the rider, are the main focus of the ride so the ideal ride is done slowly with a lot of talking, laughing, stopping to meet other pedestrians both two legged and four, and to smell the roses! It is a different skill from riding yourself for your own pure pleasure of being out on two wheels.
- Administration
- Passengers
- Mounting & Dismounting
- Starting
- Stopping
- Shifting, turning and cornering
- Riding in traffic, general
- Riding in traffic, lanes and intersections
- Riding in traffic, navigating obstacles
- Riding in traffic, communication and sharing
- Ride logs and inspection sheets - The need is for our pilots to do a proper check of the trishaw prior to every shift. We propose have two shifts per day, one two hour morning shift from 10:00am to 12:00n and then a three hour afternoon shift from 1:00p to 4:00p allowing pilots a switch over and lunch break from 12:00n to 1:00p if needed. Every time a new pilot takes over the vehicle, there should be a documentation of the operability of the trishaw and a report of any problems at the end.
- Knowledge of routes - The routes have been described in another blog post and will, for now, be the only routes we will be riding this summer.
